BrothersDirected by Jetse Batelaan
Being presented at the Wiener Festwochen (Vienna), Parc de la Villette (Paris) and the New Island Festival (New York), Over 't IJ, Oerol festival and Festival Boulevard (The Netherlands) and the FiraTàrrega Festival, Tàrrega. (Spain) A performance that takes you by the hand. We are given help in a life we cannot manage alone. A woman sleeps while a nurse next to her bed holds her hand. A man in the sea and a brother who has followed him up to his middle. A couple throwing plates and people in white waiting until it’s over. Brothers give each other a hand, but in the end, let go again. We are all alone and we shall never resolve this. Jetse Batelaan: "I am looking for the comfort of recognition: it doesn’t matter, because none of us are capable of it. I create out of nothing. My work is never self-evident and definitely not non-committal. All that appears on stage is essential for my production. I cautiously try to visualize my story in vivid, often wordless, absurd performances. And then I shamelessly lose myself in the delight of my audience." |
